About the event

This concert by the London Obbligato Collective offers a musical response to Joseph Wright of Derby: From the Shadows, exploring the curiosity and expressive nuance of Wright’s candlelit scenes.

At the centre is Edward Miller, flautist, organist, and composer, whose portrait by Wright was recently rediscovered. As a young musician, Miller played in Handel’s orchestra, and his networks connect him to William Herschel and indirectly to Thomas Linley the Elder, both active in Bath’s musical life during the 1770s. Wright himself briefly lived in Bath, situating these figures in the same Enlightenment milieu.

The programme also features Handel’s cantata Pensieri notturni di Filli, whose nocturnal atmosphere resonates with the introspective mood of Wright’s work.
